Sony’s PlayStation Studios Announce New Strategy for Video Games, Balancing Console Exclusivity with Platform Expansion

Sony announces that single-player narrative video games will be made available on PC following their PS5 debut

Hermen Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios, has announced Sony’s strategy for video games on PlayStation. According to Hulst, service games will be launched on both PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PC simultaneously, while narrative titles for single player will arrive on computers after a period of time following their release on the console.

Sony is expanding beyond consoles to platforms such as PCs, mobile phones, and virtual reality glasses. The company emphasizes that the console remains “the best place to play” due to its symbiotic relationship with Sony’s hardware. Hulst revealed that there will be a minimum of a year between the launch of a game on the PS console and on PC, with exceptions for games as a service that will have simultaneous launches on both platforms.

The business strategy in relation to the timing of new title releases outlines plans for both service and narrative games. For service games, they will have day 1 launches on both console and PC, while narrative single-player titles will first be released on PlayStation before reaching PC. This approach aims to reach new audiences who may be interested in playing titles on the console.

Sony’s strategy for PlayStation games reflects a balance between console exclusivity and platform expansion, catering to different types of games and audiences. The approach aims to maximize the reach and impact of their titles across various platforms.
