The upcoming Euro 2024 tournament, scheduled to take place in Germany this June, is eagerly anticipated by football fans worldwide. Along with the excitement of the fans, the world of technology is also buzzing with anticipation for the beautiful game.
A recent analysis conducted by the Zeileis research group using artificial intelligence (AI) has predicted France as the main favorite to win the trophy, with a probability of 19.2%. This prediction was based on four sophisticated statistical models that took into account various factors such as historical performance over the past eight years, betting house expectations and probabilities, player qualifications, and additional variables like GDP.
The models were trained with data from matches played between Euro 2021 and now, analyzing goals scored by each team and simulating all group stage matches 100,000 times using the Poisson method. The simulation results placed England in second place with a 16.7% chance of winning, followed by Germany with 13.7% and Spain with a 12% likelihood of winning, securing them fourth place in the predictions.
An interactive graph was used to display how each team’s expected performance varied throughout the tournament. While France started off with better odds than England at first glance, they were projected to lead towards the end of the tournament due to their superior play throughout.
While AI can offer valuable insights and predictions, there is always room for unpredictability and magic on a football pitch. Surprises and excitement are what keep fans on edge and make history unforgettable.
