Spring 2024 STAAR Test Results Show Mixed Performance in Texas Schools: The Need for More Math Interventions and Research-Based Strategies.

2024 STAAR Test Results Reveal ‘Substantial Disparities’ in Math and Science Performance Among Grades 3-8

Spring 2024 STAAR test results for grades 3-8 were released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) showing varying outcomes in reading and language arts. While grades 3, 5, and 8 displayed a slight decrease in performance, grades 4 and 5 saw an impressive increase of 3% and 4%, respectively. Social studies performance remained consistent with the previous year, while math and science showed a decline across all grade levels.

The TEA attributed the decline in math and science performance to the ongoing challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Commissioner Mike Morath emphasized the significant gaps in mathematics achievement and highlighted the need for targeted interventions and research-based strategies to ensure students acquire the necessary foundational skills for academic success.

Despite improvements in other subject areas, the results underscored the importance of addressing persisting challenges in math education. The TEA is committed to intensifying efforts to support students in mastering fundamental math concepts to achieve desired academic outcomes.
