An elderly care center in Stamford, Connecticut is facing scrutiny after the arrest of one of its employees on abuse charges. Lydia Lungile, a 40-year-old woman from Newark, N.J., was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and cruelty to persons for neglecting the care of an elderly man under her supervision.
The arrest came after months of investigation by Norwalk Police, who received a report of elder abuse involving a man at the Fairfield Family Care Center. Witnesses and evidence indicated that Lungile, who was responsible for the man’s care, failed to attend to him after he fell out of his bed and was injured during the night.
Lungile was arrested by the United States Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Task Force in Orange, Connecticut and her bond was set at $125,000. She is scheduled to appear in court on June 5. The Fairfield Family Care Center has been providing elderly care services in Stamford for over 25 years and Lungile was immediately terminated after the incident.
According to a company spokesperson, Lungile had taken an allergy pill that made her drowsy and unable to respond to the situation promptly. However, this explanation has not yet been confirmed by authorities or witnesses. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter but it’s clear that this incident has put them under scrutiny and they will have to take steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future.
