Steelers Cut Backup Defensive Back and Release Wide Receiver as Training Camp Approaches

Steelers release defensive back Trenton Thompson

On Wednesday, the Steelers made an announcement regarding their roster moves. They cut backup defensive back Trenton Thompson from the team, who had been with them for just over a year. Thompson, 26, joined the Steelers during their 2023 training camp and had spent time on both the practice squad and active roster before being placed on injured reserve in January.

In his previous season with the Steelers, Thompson played in six games with one start, totaling 212 defensive snaps and 58 on special teams. He recorded a total of 22 tackles and one interception during that time. It is believed that the drafting of safety Ryan Watts in the sixth round may have contributed to Thompson’s departure from the team.

The Steelers also announced the release of wide receiver Denzel Mims, a move that had previously been reported. Mims had been with the team since 2019 but was not able to make a significant impact during his time with the organization.
