Steelers Cut Defensive Back and Wide Receiver from Roster to Add Depth in Defense and WR Positions

Trenton Thompson released by Steelers

The Steelers made some roster moves on Wednesday, cutting backup defensive back Trenton Thompson and wide receiver Denzel Mims. Thompson, 26, had joined the team during the 2023 training camp but had struggled to secure a consistent spot on the active roster. He had briefly been placed on injured reserve on Jan. 10 after bouncing between the practice squad and active roster throughout the season.

Thompson appeared in six games with one start, accumulating 22 tackles and an interception during his time with the Steelers. However, his release may have been influenced by the team’s decision to draft safety Ryan Watts in the sixth round, adding depth to the defensive backfield.

Meanwhile, Mims had been acquired in a previous move but was now also part of the team’s efforts to reassess and adjust their roster before the upcoming season. During his time with the Steelers, Mims appeared in three games with no starts, totaling two receptions for 45 yards.
