Supporting the Senior Mind: Navigating Mental Health Services with Medicare Expert Shannon Drotning

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and during this time, FOX 12’s Well-Being Revolution, in partnership with Providence Health, has been highlighting the behavioral health supports available to the community. As we approach the end of May, FOX 12 spoke with two local experts to discuss resources specifically aimed at helping the older generation with their mental health.

Dr. Paul Giger emphasized that seniors face unique mental health challenges as they age, often compounded by physical medical conditions. He highlighted the importance of addressing mental illness in older adults promptly, especially considering the impact it can have on existing medical conditions. Access to mental health resources and a comprehensive network of providers is crucial for individuals aged 65 and older.

For many in this age group, Medicare serves as a vital resource for insurance coverage. Choosing the right plan can be overwhelming and stressful, according to Medicare expert Shannon Drotning. She advised starting the enrollment process three to six months in advance and ensuring that trusted doctors and specialists are included in the plan, along with essential services like mental health counseling.

Drotning stressed the importance of working with a licensed advisor who represents all available plans and can tailor recommendations to each individual’s specific needs. It’s not just about financial aspects like deductibles and copays; holistic considerations such as fitness, vision, dental, and mental health coverage should also be evaluated to ensure comprehensive care.
