On a sunny spring day in Somerville, Massachusetts, on May 23, 1962, twelve-year-old Little League pitcher Everette “Eddy” Woodrow Knowles III survived a traumatic accident that would change the medical world. Eddy was train hopping when his arm was torn from his body below the shoulder. Despite not remembering the details of the incident, a quick-thinking store clerk named Alice Chmielewski stepped in to help by applying pressure to the wound while someone called for emergency services. Eddy was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital where an unprecedented medical procedure was attempted.
