Sweating Bullets: The Dangers of Improper Air Conditioning Use During Extreme Heat

During hot weather, exposure to heat can lead to dehydration, which is a serious health risk. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hau from the Department of General Internal Medicine at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi warns that improper air conditioning usage can increase the likelihood of heat stroke and stroke.

When moving between indoor spaces with continuous air conditioning, sudden changes in temperature can cause blood vessels to constrict and impede blood circulation. This can lead to adverse health consequences such as heat stroke and stroke. It is important for individuals to maintain a room temperature between 25-28 degrees Celsius and avoid setting the air conditioner too low, as this can trigger heat stroke by causing rapid changes in body temperature.

People who are exposed to sudden and extreme temperature changes are at a higher risk of experiencing heat stroke, especially outdoor workers, young children, the elderly, pregnant women, those with underlying health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and diabetes, and individuals who work or exercise in hot environments.

Air conditioning itself does not directly cause heat stroke. However, prolonged exposure to low temperatures from air conditioning can contribute to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Symptoms of heat stroke may include skin redness and dryness, increased body temperature, fatigue, headaches, difficulty breathing, dizziness, altered consciousness
