Mollie O’Callaghan and Ariarne Titmus made history at the Australian Olympic Trials with incredible 200m freestyle times. While Titmus broke the world record with a time of 1 minute, 52.23 seconds, O’Callaghan finished just behind her with a time of 1:52.48. Both swimmers trained under coach Dean Boxall in Brisbane and expressed their happiness at achieving such fast times.
Titmus was particularly elated as she had been training for this moment for years. She finally achieved a swim that reflected all of her hard work and dedication. Meanwhile, O’Callaghan made her Olympic debut in Tokyo at just 17 years old and has since won gold and silver medals at various World Championships. While she was pleased with her performance, she also mentioned that she is still learning and getting used to competing in the 200m freestyle event.
It is worth noting that no other active swimmer has ever recorded a faster time in the 200m freestyle than these two women. The last time Australian swimmers achieved a one-two finish in an Olympic event was in 2004, making this feat even more impressive. Additionally, Katie Ledecky was the last U.S woman to win an Olympic or world medal in the same event with gold and silver finishes at various championships .
The upcoming U.S Olympic Swimming Trials will be broadcast live on NBC Sports and Peacock from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, giving fans the chance to see these talented athletes compete once again on the world stage
