The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has recently made a decision that talcum powder is linked to the development of ovarian cancer in women, based on limited evidence in men, sufficient evidence in rats, and strong mechanical evidence in human cells. Talc, a natural mineral commonly used in baby powder and cosmetics, is not soluble in water, alcohols or oils and has a mild earthy smell. Despite this, Johnson & Johnson recently settled allegations regarding the safety of their talc-based products for $700 million and withdrew the product from the North American market in 2020.
Numerous studies have shown increased rates of ovarian cancer in women who use or have used talcum powder on their genitals. However, asbestos contamination has made it difficult to determine talcum powder’s specific role. Observational studies conducted by the IARC and others have not definitively proven a causal link between talcum powder use and ovarian cancer.
In addition to talcum powder, the IARC also classified acrylonitrile as “carcinogenic to humans,” linking it to the development of lung cancer. Acrylonitrile is used in the production of various consumer products, including fibers, plastics and textiles. This classification serves as a warning to consumers and industry professionals about the potential risks associated with these substances.
The IARC’s announcement emphasizes that while most people are exposed to talc through baby powder or cosmetics, the greatest exposure occurs during extraction, processing or in the production of other products.
Overall, this decision by IARC highlights the need for caution when using certain consumer products that may contain harmful chemicals. It’s important for individuals to be aware of what they are putting into their bodies and take steps to protect themselves from potential harm caused by these substances.
