Telegram Introduces New Program to Get Premium Subscriptions for Free, but Privacy Concerns Arise

Telegram provides complimentary premium subscriptions in exchange for utilizing users’ mobile phones to transmit verification SMS.

Telegram has announced a new program that allows users to receive a free premium subscription in exchange for sharing their phone number with other users. This initiative raises concerns about the privacy of users who choose to participate in this program.

The premium subscription option on Telegram costs 5.49 euros per month and offers additional features such as larger file uploads, faster media downloads, text-to-voice conversion, and exclusive stickers. To access these premium services for free, users can join the P2PL program by using their phone number to send one-time password SMS messages to other users.

This program, known as peer-to-peer login (P2PL), enables users to voluntarily offer their phone number as a relay for SMS messages. Participating users agree to allow their phone number to be used to send a maximum of 150 SMS messages per month. Upon meeting this quota, users will receive a free monthly premium subscription.

However, it is important for users to note that the SMS messages sent through the P2PL program may incur charges from their mobile phone operators. Additionally, sharing phone numbers with other users for login code purposes presents privacy risks as the recipient of the OTP SMS may have access to the sender’s phone number.

Telegram emphasizes that participating in the P2PL program requires consideration of potential risks and encourages users to take precautions against any inconvenience, harassment or damage that may result from sharing phone numbers. Users have the option to withdraw from the program at any time if they wish to discontinue participation.

Overall, while this offer may seem tempting for some Telegram users looking for a way to get additional features without paying extra, it’s important for them to weigh the pros and cons carefully before making a decision about whether or not
