The Cross of Joy: Mimmo Paladino’s Artistic Tribute to Children on World Children’s Day

Paladino reveals ‘Joyful Cross’ sculpture in honor of World Children’s Day in Rome.

Mimmo Paladino, a renowned artist and prominent figure in the Transavanguardia movement, has created a unique piece of art for the first ever World Children’s Day in Rome on May 25-26. The “Cross of Joy” is a 4-metre-tall sculpture that combines Christian and fairytale imagery, showcasing Paladino’s creativity and artistic versatility.

Paladino described the creation of the cross as a great honor, emphasizing its significance for children as the true stars of the event. The piece aims to ignite the imagination of both children and adults by blending elements of Christian tradition with whimsical fairy tale motifs.

The unveiling of the cross will take place at the opening ceremony of the two-day celebration in Rome, where children will be the focus of attention. Paladino spent a month completing the cross, which beautifully represents the essence of Christianity and the boundless creativity of children.

The goal of World Children’s Day is to celebrate and inspire the innocence and imagination of children worldwide, making Paladino’s cross a fitting centerpiece for the event. The artist’s diverse artistic experimentation is evident in the juxtaposition of themes in the “Cross of Joy,” showcasing his unique style. Following its display at St. Peter’s Square on May 26th, where Pope Francis will lead a Mass attended by children, journalists and media personnel must submit accreditation requests at least 24 hours in advance through the Holy See Press Office’s online system to cover events on May 25th and 26th.
