The Medical Marvel of Yellow Camellia: Advancing Cultivation and Health Benefits through Research in Lam Dong

Developing a production process for creating medicinal strains from three types of yellow camellia

In the province of Lam Dong, a team of researchers from the Center for Tropical Forestry collaborated with various research units to develop a process for producing seeds and medicinal herbs from three species of yellow camellia. Led by the Ministry of Science and Technology, this project was part of a national scientific mission focused on conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources.

Under the supervision of Dr. Tran Hong Son from the Tropical Forestry Center, experimental production techniques were refined, planting methods were optimized, harvesting practices were improved, and methods for processing and preserving medicinal yellow flower tea were established. The project ran from the end of 2018 to May 2024 and involved developing basic standards for the varieties and medicinal herbs of the three types of tea, as well as establishing seed gardens and propagation gardens for each species.

The research team also created a model following GACP-WHO standards for high-yield intensive cultivation in Lam Dong, with plans to transfer these techniques to other regions. Yellow flower tea is considered a medicinal herb with various health benefits according to Oriental medicine. It is believed to help treat tumors, reduce cholesterol, lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, stabilize blood pressure, detoxify the liver, and more. Research worldwide has shown that yellow flower tea contains active ingredients that inhibit cancer cells and contains beneficial trace elements.

The results of this mission are expected to be evaluated and accepted in June. This research contributes to the understanding and cultivation of yellow camellia species for medicinal purposes, with the potential for wider application in different ecological regions.
