The New York Mets Transfer Kodai Senga to 60-Day IL, Making Room for Tyler Jay

The New York Mets have decided to transfer Kodai Senga to the 60-day injured list, meaning he will not be able to return to the field until at least May 27. Senga has been dealing with a posterior capsule strain in his shoulder since late in spring training, which has kept him out of action. However, there have been positive developments in his recovery, as he began playing catch on back-to-back days at the beginning of April, a significant step forward according to manager Carlos Mendoza.

Mendoza expressed optimism about Senga’s progress, noting that he is slowly moving in the right direction. Despite initial expectations of a return in May or June, Senga’s move to the 60-day IL means he won’t be able to come back until at least May 27. The decision to transfer Senga was made in order to make room on the 40-man roster for left-hander Tyler Jay, who was called up to the big leagues.

With Senga no longer counting against the 40-man roster, the Mets were able to add Jay without risking losing another player. In a corresponding move, right-hander Dedniel Nunez was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to make space for Jay on the 26-man roster. Jay, 29, could potentially make his big league debut soon, while Senga continues his recovery process on the injured list.
