The Rising Star of Oklahoma’s Tourism Industry: How Natural Beauty and Sports are Driving Growth

Local Economy Thrives due to Increase in Tourists Visiting Natural Attractions

In recent years, Oklahoma’s tourism industry has experienced significant growth, with state leaders reporting that interest in traveling to the state is on the rise. According to the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, revenue from tourism in Oklahoma increased from $10.5 billion to $12.8 billion in 2022 alone, a growth of 23%.

Executive Director Shelley Zumwalt of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department attributes this growth to the state’s natural attractions, such as its sand dunes and waterfalls. Additionally, sports play a major role in Oklahoma’s tourism industry, with Oklahoma City set to host various events for the 2028 Summer Olympics. This will bring even more attention to the state and showcase what it has to offer on a global scale.

Zumwalt emphasizes that tourism is not just about attracting visitors, but also about economic development. It is the third largest industry in Oklahoma and generates over $833 million in state and local taxes every year. By promoting tourism to residents of other states, Oklahoma can continue to attract more visitors and boost its economy through this growing industry.
