The Seattle Seahawks have been on the lookout for a second quarterback to complement Geno Smith after Drew Lock, their backup for the past two years, signed with the New York Giants in free agency. Many speculated that the Seahawks would draft a quarterback, with Michael Penix Jr., who played at Washington under the current Seattle offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, being a potential candidate.
However, John Schneider, as usual, surprised everyone by trading for quarterback Sam Howell from the Washington Commanders on the east coast. At 24 years old and with two years of NFL experience, Howell brings tantalizing potential to the Seahawks. Despite a challenging season last year with the Commanders, where he threw 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions on a struggling team, there were still moments of brilliance that caught Schneider’s eye.
Although Howell’s performance in 2023 had its ups and downs, it is clear that there is something special about him that the Seahawks see. Whether or not this potential fully blooms in Seattle remains to be seen, but it is evident that Howell is a player worth keeping an eye on.
