TikTok has announced that it will start labeling content created using artificial intelligence, especially if it was uploaded from external sources. This initiative is part of TikTok’s efforts to combat misinformation on its platform. The company believes that while AI provides creative opportunities, it can sometimes confuse or mislead viewers if they are unaware that the content was generated by AI.
To address this issue, TikTok is collaborating with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity to utilize their Content Credentials technology. This technology can attach metadata to content, allowing TikTok to instantly recognize and label AI-generated content. The labeling of AI-generated content on TikTok started with images and videos on Thursday, with plans to expand to audio-only content in the near future.
TikTok has positioned itself as the first video-sharing platform to implement Content Credentials and is working with the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative to promote the adoption of these credentials in the industry. Adam Presser, TikTok’s Head of Operations & Trust and Safety emphasized the importance of users understanding the difference between fact and fiction, especially with the rise of AI-generated content.
The announcement of this new labeling initiative was made on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” In addition to helping users differentiate between AI-generated and human-created content, this new policy also promotes transparency and accountability for creators who use AI in their work. By providing clear labels for AI-generated content, users can make more informed decisions about what they consume and share on social media platforms like TikTok.
