Turner on the Mend: Phillies’ Shortstop Steps Up as Turner Recovers from Hamstring Injury

Turner and Phillies hitting the road, ticking off boxes

Edmundo Sosa has been stepping up as the primary shortstop for the Phillies while Trea Turner is on the road recovering from a hamstring strain. Although not expected to return in the next two series, Turner has been working hard to rehab his injury and make a quick comeback. The original projection was for him to be out for six weeks, but he has been making good progress.

During his time with the team, Turner has been doing distance running, fielding groundballs, and hitting in the batting cage. The Phillies are gradually increasing his activities, with plans for him to hit early on the field and run at 90% speed. If all goes well, he will run the bases at full speed in San Francisco next week.

Manager Rob Thomson expressed confidence in Turner’s progress but emphasized the need for caution to prevent further injury. The team is being cautious with Turner’s recovery, as hamstring injuries can be tricky and there is a risk of re-aggravation if he returns too quickly.

In Sosa’s absence, he has been performing well at the plate with a batting average of .357 and improving his hitting to all fields compared to previous seasons. He has also hit three doubles, two triples, a home run, nine RBI, and 13 runs scored in 15 games this season. Overall, Sosa is hitting .323 this season and proving himself as a capable shortstop fill-in for Turner.
