Turning the Tides of Addiction: ECU Health Hosts Mental Health Expo to Reduce Stigma and Provide Resources for Eastern NC Community

Dr. David Ryan, an obstetrician-gynecologist with ECU Health and a clinical assistant professor of Addiction Medicine at Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, recently gave a presentation on “Turning the Tides of Addiction.” In his talk, he emphasized the importance of reducing stigma around addiction and viewing it as a disease. Dr. Ryan also highlighted the need to break down stigmas surrounding life-saving medications used in addiction treatment.

The Mental Health Expo is a crucial event that helps communities understand mental health issues and substance use. Dr. Ryan expressed the significance of such gatherings in reducing stigma and addressing these important issues openly.

Glenn Simpson, the service line administrator for behavioral health at ECU Health, stressed the importance of bringing exhibitors together in one place to showcase the available resources in eastern North Carolina. He shared information about the upcoming state-of-the-art behavioral health hospital in Greenville, scheduled to open in 2025.

Lillie Malpass, the executive director of the Pitt County Coalition on Substance Use, emphasized the importance of connecting with community members and other organizations at the event. She highlighted the value of exchanging information and breaking out of organizational silos to collaborate with prevention, recovery, and treatment organizations.

By coming together at events like the Mental Health Expo, these organizations can work towards a common goal of addressing addiction and mental health challenges in the community. The resources provided by ECU Health Behavioral Health Services are essential in supporting individuals in need of help and treatment for addiction and mental health issues.
