Hezbollah and the Israeli military are on the brink of a larger conflict along Lebanon’s southern border, warned two U.N. officials in Lebanon. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon, and Aroldo Lazaro, the head of U.N. peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, expressed deep concerns about the recent escalation along the border.
In a written statement, they highlighted the real danger of a miscalculation leading to a sudden and wider conflict between Hezbollah and Israel’s military. The United States and France are actively seeking a resolution to the hostilities in the region, with Hezbollah stating that they will only cease fire if Israel’s military offensive on Gaza comes to a halt.
The two officials urged caution and called for calm along the border to prevent further escalation of hostilities. They also emphasized that any solution must be based on international law and respect for human rights. As tensions continue to rise in the region, it is crucial that all parties involved take steps to de-escalate tensions before it’s too late.
