The Science Museum Group has been under fire recently, with a protest led by Greta Thunberg taking place at the museum. The group unfurled a banner that read: “2024, more droughts and floods – fuelled by Science Museum oil and gas sponsors”. The Fossil Free Science Museum coalition, made up of Extinction Rebellion and Scientists for Extinction Rebellion, expressed concerns about the museum’s reputation being tarnished by its oil and gas sponsors.
Despite criticism from some activists, Sir Ian Blatchford, the director and chief executive of the Science Museum Group, emphasized the importance of engaging audiences with the science of climate change. He described it as the defining challenge of our time. The museum’s new gallery was made possible by sponsorship from Adani Green Energy, a partnership that has faced controversy.
Blatchford defended the museum’s decision to accept sponsorship, stating that the trustees believe in maintaining a relationship with companies like Adani Green Energy to promote efforts in making the global economy less carbon intensive. Despite this controversy, the Science Museum remains committed to addressing climate change and educating the public on this critical issue.
