Unifor’s Health Care Workers Poised for Wage Increases and Benefit Improvements in Ontario following Arbitrator Kaplan Decision

Unifor hopes to win SEIU-CUPE award for Ontario health care members

Unifor expects to achieve similar wage increases and benefit improvements for its health care workers in Ontario, following the recent decision made by Arbitrator William Kaplan. The union congratulates OCHU-CUPE and SEIU Healthcare on their successful award, which was based on their commitment to collaborate and achieve a common goal.

According to Unifor National President Lana Payne, every person in the province needs access to quality public health care, and supporting workers with respectable pay and working conditions is essential for achieving that goal. Unifor’s Northern Group, including 15 acute care units from Locals 229 and 1359 in Northern Ontario, began negotiations on February 13, 2024. The group will be in mediation on May 4 as they work towards achieving improvements to worker pay and working conditions.

Unifor is Canada’s largest private sector union, representing over 315,000 workers across various industries. The union advocates for workers’ rights, fights for equality and social justice, and aims to create progressive change for a better future. With the recent decision made by Arbitrator Kaplan in favor of OCHU-CUPE and SEIU Healthcare members, Unifor is confident that it can achieve similar outcomes for its own health care workers in Ontario through collaboration and collective bargaining efforts.
