Unprecedented Demand for AI Professionals: The Future of the Job Market in Italy and Beyond

AI is changing careers in Italy

In Italy and across the globe, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the work environment, necessitating a shift in skill sets and job opportunities. A study by Hays Italia found that demand for professionals specializing in AI increased by 88% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous year. This data underscores the importance of digital skills and marks a turning point for the job market.

While approximately 20% of Italian professionals are already using generative AI tools, many companies (around 20%) remain resistant to adopting AI due to concerns about benefits and security. However, most companies have not yet developed a clear strategy for implementing this technology. This highlights the urgent need for training and professional development, as only 6% of companies currently offer programs on this innovative technology.

Entrepreneurs and managers are optimistic about AI’s impact, but employees have mixed feelings. Nearly half (47%) express concerns about potential job market repercussions, fearing that AI may eliminate more jobs than it creates. Nevertheless, a large majority (76%) are open to embracing changes in their professions or specializations due to AI’s potential benefits such as increased productivity, reduced errors, and enhanced creativity.

The demand for new professional roles in the AI field is diverse, ranging from AI Engineers to AI Ethicists, AI Architects, AI/ML Trust and Safety Managers, Cloud AI Developers, Machine Learning Developers, computer vision specialists, and business analysts focused on AI. To stay ahead of these challenges, continuous training and development are essential.

Many professionals express a willingness to participate in programs that prepare them for these new roles. As such, employers must prioritize investing in their employees’ professional development to ensure they remain competitive in this rapidly changing landscape.
