Unprecedented Increase in Guernsey Mental Health Ward Admissions Linked to Cannabis Use: What it Means for the Future of Mental Health Services in Guernsey

Cannabis use linked to 25% of adult mental health admissions

In 2023, the number of patients treated on the adult mental health ward in Guernsey was lower than in the previous year. Despite this, a report by the States found that one in four admissions to the ward were likely linked to cannabis use. This is a significant increase compared to only 4% in 2019 when medicinal cannabis prescriptions were introduced.

Although it is not definitively proven that cannabis is solely responsible for these admissions, doctors believe that it is a significant factor. The trend is consistent with international experiences and is impacting individuals, carers, and the mental health service in Guernsey.

Despite the increase in admissions related to cannabis, the report notes that 94% of heavy cannabis users do not experience psychosis. Additionally, referrals to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service have increased by 14% from 2022 to 2023, indicating a growing need for early intervention in mental health issues.

Overall, while there has been progress made in implementing the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy since its launch in September 2023, more needs to be done to address this growing concern. Jo Cottell, chief executive of Guernsey Mind, highlighted the importance of prevention and early intervention as key factors in improving mental health outcomes for individuals and society as a whole.
