Vanderbilt University Launches College of Connected Computing for AI, Data Science and More.

Vanderbilt University has announced the establishment of a new college dedicated to the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and related disciplines. The College of Connected Computing aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and enhance computing education through a “computing for all” approach.

The new college will be overseen by a dean who will report directly to Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. C. Cybele Raver and School of Engineering Dean Dr. Krishnendu “Krish” Roy. A search for the dean is set to begin in late August.

Chancellor Dr. Daniel Diermeier emphasized the importance of advanced computing, AI, and data science in shaping society. He believes that Vanderbilt must play a larger role in studying, understanding, and applying these rapidly evolving disciplines in order to fulfill its mission of preparing students for their careers and advancing research.

Dr. Raver highlighted how the new college will enable Vanderbilt to expand on its existing programs and provide exceptional educational opportunities for students. She noted that there is growing global interest in AI, which aligns well with Vanderbilt’s expertise in the field.

Dr. Roy expressed that the establishment of the College of Connected Computing is significant for both the School of Engineering and the entire university, as computing is becoming increasingly intertwined with all disciplines. He believes that knowledge and power in computing will greatly influence the future of education, research, and thinking at Vanderbilt University.

In summary, the creation of this interdisciplinary college represents a pivotal moment for Vanderbilt University, enabling it to make groundbreaking discoveries at the intersection of computing and other fields while effectively addressing society’s most pressing challenges with advanced computing solutions through enhanced education opportunities for students
