Veteran Mother Preserves her Uterus with Successful Surgery for Benign Uterine Tumors

Nhung, a 42-year-old woman, had been experiencing menstrual disorders for a long time. She had given birth to her second child 10 years ago and had not had a gynecological examination since then. After recently experiencing heavy menstruation that left her feeling tired, she decided to seek help at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

On May 2, Dr. Lam Hoang Duy from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Center at the hospital examined Nhung and found that she had vaginal bleeding and a uterus the size of a person about 18 weeks pregnant. The uterine fibroid was sized at 8×6 cm, and her hemoglobin levels were low, indicating severe anemia. After receiving a blood transfusion, Nhung’s health condition stabilized, and she was prepared for surgery to remove the tumors from her uterus.

Dr. Lam Hoang Duy successfully performed the surgery to remove the fibroids, allowing Nhung to preserve her uterus. The surgery lasted 1.5 hours, during which Nhung lost about 200 ml of blood but did not require additional transfusions. After three days of recovery in the hospital, she was discharged in good health.

In discussing Nhung’s case, Dr. Duy emphasized the importance of regular gynecological exams, especially for women with uterine fibroids. These benign tumors can cause serious complications if not managed properly, leading to acute blood loss and other health issues. Women should be attentive to symptoms such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, prolonged menstruation, and abdominal pain, seeking medical attention promptly.

Dr. Duy advised that early detection and management of uterine fibroids are crucial to preventing complications and preserving the uterus. Women should schedule regular gynecological exams at least once a year to monitor their reproductive health and address any concerns. By staying informed and proactive, women can maintain their health and well-being.

Nhung’s experience serves as a reminder of how important it is for women to prioritize their reproductive health by undergoing regular gynecological examinations even if they have no concerns or symptoms related to their reproductive system.

In conclusion, Dr. Duy emphasizes that early detection and management of uterine fibroids are essential in preventing complications such as acute blood loss or other health issues that may arise from these benign tumors if left untreated or undetected.

Women should pay attention to any signs or symptoms related to their reproductive system regularly and seek medical advice promptly if they suspect any irregularities or abnormalities in their period patterns or general well-being.
