A 74-year-old man named Mr. Thai underwent a complex three-stage laparoscopic surgery at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City to remove malignant tumors and reconstruct his esophagus with a gastric tube. He was diagnosed with stage three esophageal cancer after experiencing symptoms of choking and hiccups for over three months with an unknown cause.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Do Minh Hung, Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Surgery, decided to perform the operation in three stages. The first phase involved removing the esophagus and lymph nodes from the chest cavity. This was followed by surgery on the abdomen to shape the esophagus with a stomach tube and open the jejunum for feeding. The final stage was neck surgery to connect the stomach tube to the newly formed esophagus.
After an 8-hour surgery, Mr. Thai recovered well and was expected to be discharged from the hospital after 8 days. Pathological results revealed squamous carcinoma invading the muscle layer, and he will continue treatment with oncologists.
Esophageal cancer is often detected late, leading to lower treatment success rates. Dr. Hung emphasized the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, avoiding risk factors, and getting regular health check-ups for early cancer detection. Detecting cancer early improves treatment effectiveness and increases the chances of successful treatment.
Mr. Thai’s case highlights how important it is for individuals to take proactive steps in maintaining their health and preventing cancer development through regular check-ups and healthy lifestyle choices.
Dr Hung’s team performed a complex operation that required expertise in gastrointestinal endoscopy and surgery, as well as precision during each stage of the procedure due to its location near important organs such as the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels.
The patient’s successful recovery is a testament to Dr Hung’s skillful hands and expertise in performing such surgeries.
In conclusion, Mr Thai’s case underscores how crucial it is for patients who have been diagnosed with stage three esophageal cancer to seek medical attention promptly and receive appropriate treatment as soon as possible.
With proper medical care and precautions taken by patients like Mr Thai, it is possible for individuals facing this serious condition to recover fully or even live long healthy lives after their treatments are completed successfully.
