Vietnam and Russia Join Forces for Nuclear Science and Technology Research Center Project

Vietnam and Russia are joining forces to develop the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Center Project, which will feature a new 10 MW research reactor. The goal of this project is to produce radioactive pharmaceuticals for cancer treatment and diagnosis, as well as irradiate silicon to create semiconductor materials for chip production.

The cooperation between Vietnam and Russia was announced by Dr. Tran Chi Thanh, Director of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute, during a press conference organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology. In June, the General Director of Rosatom and the Minister of Science and Technology of Vietnam exchanged a memorandum of understanding on the implementation plan for the project. They agreed to cooperate effectively in building and operating the center, which is expected to be located in Long Khanh City, Dong Nai.

The new research reactor will significantly increase production capacity compared to current capabilities in radioactive pharmaceuticals. To ensure its safe and efficient operation, the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute is preparing specialized groups in various areas related to the research reactor. This project represents Vietnam’s first large-capacity nuclear research reactor and is a significant step in its nuclear energy development.

Vietnam’s policy to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes aligns with those of several countries around the world that are focusing on nuclear energy resources to support their development goals. This project is a major milestone in Vietnam’s efforts to enhance its capabilities in nuclear science and technology research and applications.

To support this project, the Ministry of Science and Technology has requested assistance from Rosatom in training staff to operate the research reactor. This collaboration aims not only to enhance Vietnam’s capabilities but also contribute towards global efforts towards sustainable development through peaceful use of nuclear energy.
