The Golden State Warriors have filled their two openings on the coaching staff with veteran coach Terry Stotts and former NBA All-Star player Jerry Stackhouse, Steve Kerr announced on Monday. Stotts brings 13 years of head-coaching experience to the team, most recently with the Portland Trail Blazers. He left his assistant role with the Milwaukee Bucks after discord with head coach Adrian Griffin led to his resignation just before the season started.
Stackhouse is a two-time All-Star who retired in 2013 and transitioned into coaching. He coached for three seasons with the Toronto Raptors and then spent a year as an assistant in Memphis before becoming the head coach at Vanderbilt. Stackhouse was fired from that position after the team finished 9-23 last season. He joins the Warriors coaching staff due to the sudden passing of assistant Dejan “Deki” Milojević in February, who worked primarily with the team’s big men.
With Stotts’ extensive experience and Stackhouse’s strong personality, the Warriors are expected to have a stronger coaching staff next season. Kerr initially did not expect significant changes to his coaching staff, but with Atkinson’s departure, he decided to bring in two coaches with previous head-coaching experience. Kris Weems remains on staff and fills the final spot, having been promoted to the front bench last summer after Jama Mahlalela left for a job with the Toronto Raptors. Bruce “Q” Fraser moves back to the second bench after three seasons on the front bench.
