Wayne Rooney’s Eager to Rebuild Reputation: Takes on New Challenge as Plymouth Argyle Head Coach

Currently, Wayne Rooney is in talks with Championship team Plymouth Argyle regarding their vacant head coach position. Rooney, who holds the record for most goals scored for Manchester United with 253 and also netted 53 goals while playing for England, is eager to rebuild his reputation after a tumultuous stint at Birmingham. The 38-year-old is looking to take on a new challenge and prove his worth as a manager.

Plymouth Argyle is seeking a new manager following the departure of Ian Foster late last season. Neil Dewsnip, the director of football, and coach Kevin Nancekivell took charge temporarily and managed to secure Plymouth’s safety in the league. However, during that time, they ironically defeated Birmingham, who had sacked Rooney just months earlier.

Dewsnip has a prior connection with Rooney from their time together at Everton’s academy. As an aspiring young player, Rooney was coached by Dewsnip at Everton before moving on to Manchester United. Now that he’s looking to start his managerial career again, he may be interested in reconnecting with Dewsnip at Plymouth.

During his playing career, Rooney amassed 763 appearances for clubs such as Everton, Manchester United, DC United in MLS, and eventually Derby County. After transitioning into a player-coach role at Derby in November 2020, he soon took over as the permanent manager before announcing his retirement two months later. He then returned to the United States to manage his former club DC United before taking on another brief tenure at Birmingham.
