West Nile Fever Outbreak in Israel: 4 Dead, 36 Hospitalized, and 80% of Cases are Symptomless

48 individuals diagnosed with West Nile fever, with 36 currently hospitalized, confirms Health Ministry

On Wednesday, the Health Ministry announced that 48 people have been diagnosed with West Nile fever in Israel. Of these patients, 36 required hospitalization, and five of them are currently on ventilators. Unfortunately, four individuals have succumbed to the virus. The outbreak has affected only those from the central region of Israel.

It is important to note that approximately 80% of those infected with West Nile fever will not experience any symptoms, while the remaining 20% will exhibit symptoms to varying degrees. These symptoms can include fever, headaches, fatigue, and body aches. However, less than 1% of infected individuals develop neurological complications.

It is crucial to remember that the West Nile virus is not contagious. Therefore, there is no need for concern about transmission from person to person or animal to human. It is recommended that individuals take precautions such as wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active and using insect repellent.
