Wind Power on the Rise: The Future of Renewable Energy in Finland

This year, wind power will become the leading renewable energy source for electricity generation

Finland’s Wind Power Association has predicted that wind power will become the largest form of renewable energy in the country this year. This is due to rapid construction progress, with over 1,660 wind turbines currently operating and 60 new ones commissioned so far. With additional plants set to be completed later this year, wind power is expected to produce a total of 8,000 megawatts of energy by the end of the year.

Despite the positive outlook for wind power construction, high interest rates and construction costs have caused delays in new investment decisions. Anni Mikkonen, CEO of the Finnish Wind Energy Association, expressed concern about how these delays could impact future electricity consumption in the country.

While more than half of Finnish wind turbines are located in Ostrobothnia, there has been an increase in wind power construction activity in Central Finland and Satakunta this year. Mikkonen highlighted the potential for further development in Eastern Finland, emphasizing the importance of large investments in this region for both economic growth and long-term vitality.

A recent working group report on wind power development in Eastern Finland suggests that although investing in this region can be challenging and costly, it is feasible and could greatly benefit the local economy. Mikkonen emphasized that large investments could have a positive impact on Eastern Finland’s economic development overall.

In conclusion, despite some challenges such as high interest rates and construction costs, Finland’s wind power industry is progressing rapidly with predictions that it will become the largest form of renewable energy this year. The Wind Power Association’s CEO Anni Mikkonen has expressed concerns about future electricity consumption due to delays in new investment decisions but also highlighted potential opportunities for growth and investment throughout Finland.
