2024 Election: Reducing Economic Inequality and Investing in Renewable Energy: Insights from Gen Z Voters

Democratic Momentum: Minnesota college students emphasize economic importance to Gen Z

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the cost of living and inflation are emerging as significant concerns for young voters aged 18-34, including members of Generation Z and some millennials. A recent survey conducted by Tufts University highlights this issue, indicating that it is a top concern for this age group.

To gain a better understanding of how young voters are approaching these economic challenges, MPR News recently hosted a conversation with two Gen Z voters, Will Pierce and Cory Hallada, who represent different ends of the political spectrum. Pierce, a junior studying political science at Macalester College in St. Paul, and Hallada, a junior studying political science and economics at St. Olaf College in Northfield, shared their insights on how the economy is influencing their voting decisions this election season.

Pierce explained that he believes that economic policies should prioritize reducing income inequality and increasing access to affordable housing and healthcare. He also emphasized the importance of addressing climate change and investing in renewable energy sources to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Hallada, on the other hand, argued that economic policies should focus on reducing taxes and promoting job growth to spur innovation and entrepreneurship. He also highlighted the need for increased government investment in education and infrastructure to support long-term economic growth.

Both Pierce and Hallada agreed that it is essential for candidates to address these economic concerns head-on during the upcoming presidential election. They emphasized the importance of listening to young voters’ voices and working together to find solutions that benefit everyone.
