Shining a Spotlight on Mental Health in the Region: Michigan Takes Center Stage

A new behavioral health hospital is set to open in West Bloomfield, with Henry Ford Health and Acadia Healthcare joining forces on the project. This two-story hospital, which will feature 192 beds for inpatient care, will expand on the services already offered by Henry Ford in West Bloomfield and serve as an academic site for educating future behavioral healthcare providers.

In a special episode dedicated to mental health, Emily Sexton, the newly appointed CEO of Henry Ford Health, emphasized the importance of mental wellness. She joined Michigan Matters host Carol Cain, as well as Elizabeth Hertel, Director of Michigan’s Health and Human Services Department, and Eric Hipple, former Detroit Lions quarterback and mental health advocate.

Hertel discussed the state’s focus on behavioral health, mentioning that MDHHS has invested over $360 million in the past two years to ensure families have access to necessary services. Hipple emphasized the importance of mental health and wellness and shared his experiences working with individuals who have struggled with mental health issues.

Together, this trio discussed the efforts being made in the region to support individuals with mental health issues and highlighted the need for continued investment in these services. The new hospital is set to open later this year.
