A Step Towards Peace: Pashinyan and Blinken Discuss Demarcation of Armenia-Azerbaijani Border with Local Concerns in Mind

Pashinyan assures Blinken that all concerns of Tavush residents will be addressed

Pashinyan and Blinken recently had a positive discussion about the demarcation process of the Armenia-Azerbaijani border. During the phone call, Pashinyan emphasized the concerns of residents in certain villages of Tavush marz and assured that steps would be taken to address these concerns. The governments of Yerevan and Baku have preliminarily agreed to align some parts of the Tavush-Kazakh border with the inter-republican border that existed at the time of the Soviet Union’s dissolution. This demarcation process has sparked protest actions in various regions of Armenia.

Pashinyan and Blinken highlighted the importance of agreements made during the quadrilateral meeting in Prague on October 6 regarding the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process. They acknowledged that recognizing each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as implementing demarcation processes based on the Alma-Ata Declaration, paves the way for an Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Treaty. Additionally, Pashinyan mentioned a “Crossroads of Peace” project, which aims to facilitate regional communications while respecting sovereignty and jurisdiction, based on principles of equality and reciprocity.

The American side has not yet commented on this initiative, but Blinken had previously welcomed the agreement between Yerevan and Baku on the Alma-Ata declaration as a foundation for border demarcation. While there has been no statement from Baku regarding this project, it is clear that both sides are working towards finding a peaceful solution to their longstanding conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
