Achieving a Safer World with the One Health Approach: A European Union Initiative

Collaborative Approach: EU Agencies Release One Health Framework for Action

As a journalist, I have rewritten the following article to create a unique piece that is engaging and informative.

The relationship between human, animal, and plant health is intricate and interconnected. It goes beyond just food safety, climate change, and environmental sustainability. By adopting a One Health approach, we can minimize the impact of such threats and prevent them altogether. This approach will also ease human pressures on the environment and safeguard essential societal needs like food security and access to clean air and water.

To implement this approach across various sectors, a cross-agency task force has been established with five strategic objectives over the next three years (2024-2026). The task force’s primary focus is on strategic coordination, research coordination, capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and joint inter-agency activities. Through this initiative, the scientific advice provided by the agencies will become more integrated, strengthening the evidence base for One Health. This will enable them to contribute with a united voice to the One Health agenda in Europe.

In November 2023, five EU agencies responsible for providing scientific advice on environmental, public health, and food safety issues released a joint statement expressing their shared commitment to advancing the One Health agenda in Europe. To mark this momentous occasion, the Executive Directors of these agencies reaffirmed their dedication to the One Health approach in a joint video statement.

The One Health approach recognizes that human health cannot be isolated from animal and plant health or from environmental factors like climate change. By working together towards common goals, we can create a safer world where everyone’s needs are met.
