ADNOC’s $23 Billion Investment in Low-Carbon Technologies Comes to Fruition with Clean Energy Solution Shipment to Japan

ADNOC ships first low-carbon ammonia to Japan’s Mitsui

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. in Japan recently received a certified commercial shipment of low-carbon ammonia produced using Carbon Capture and Storage technology by Vertiglobe. This clean energy solution is part of ADNOC’s commitment to investing in low-carbon technologies and helping customers reduce emissions in difficult sectors.

The certification process for carbon reduction covered all stages from production to delivery and was overseen by the international accreditation agency “T. Yo. V.S. Yo. Dee.” This strategic step builds on ADNOC’s significant investment in low-carbon solutions, totaling 84 billion dirhams ($23 billion).

The ammonia shipment, produced at the Fertil plant in Ruwais Industrial City, will utilize carbon capture technology to store carbon dioxide in a saline carbonate aquifer. This marks a milestone in ADNOC’s efforts to develop global value chains for low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia.

Musabih Al Kaabi, CEO of Low Carbon Solutions and International Growth at ADNOC, highlighted the company’s commitment to developing low-carbon fuels to support a responsible transition in the energy sector. ADNOC’s partnership with Mitsui and other stakeholders in Japan demonstrates a shared commitment to building a low-carbon future.

Mitsui’s Managing Director, Junji Fukuoka, emphasized the importance of collaboration with ADNOC in delivering this groundbreaking shipment of low-carbon ammonia. Mitsui has a history of partnership with ADNOC and is actively involved in developing energy solutions like the Taziz project for low-carbon ammonia.

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry recognized the significance of ADNOC’s delivery of low-carbon ammonia to Mitsui and emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation between the UAE and Japan in advancing clean energy solutions. The partnership between ADNOC and Mitsui aims to develop a large-scale value chain for clean hydrogen and ammonia to support global climate action.

This new venture is part ofADNOC’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable development through investments in renewable energy technologies such as solar power, wind power, geothermal power, bioenergy and green hydrogen production.
