Amazon Removes Cashierless Technology from Fresh Stores in Favor of Smart Shopping Carts

Amazon discontinues use of Just Walk Out technology in Fresh stores

Amazon has announced that it will be removing its cashierless “Just Walk Out” technology from its Fresh grocery stores in the US. The technology, which was launched in 2018, utilized sensors, cameras, and AI to track customers’ selected items and automatically charge them through an app. However, Tony Hoggett, Amazon’s SVP of grocery stores, revealed in an interview with The Information that the technology is being removed as part of a remodel of Fresh stores.

Instead of the Just Walk Out system, Amazon will be implementing smart shopping carts in Fresh stores. These carts will allow customers to scan items as they shop and take care of payment automatically. It is important to note that the Just Walk Out system will still be utilized in Amazon Go stores, and will continue to be licensed to other retailers.

The removal of the Just Walk Out technology from Fresh stores signifies a shift in Amazon’s approach to cashierless technology in grocery retail. By introducing smart shopping carts, Amazon aims to provide customers with a seamless and efficient shopping experience while still maintaining the convenience of automated payment processes.
