An American buyer recently purchased a 1.36 million euro gold watch at an auction in the UK, surpassing the estimated value of 120-180 thousand euros. The watch, engraved with JJA initials, once belonged to American businessman John Jacob Astor who tragically lost his life on the Titanic at age 47. Astor, one of the wealthiest men of his time with a fortune equivalent to billions today, perished on the ship after helping his wife into a lifeboat. His body was recovered a week later with the 14-karat gold pocket watch among his belongings.
