Amid Gaza Crisis, MSF Mental Health Staff Battle Psychological Stress and Exhaustion among Medical Workers

Healthcare workers in Gaza struggle with the mental health effects of a relentless conflict

MSF’s mental health staff in Gaza is facing a crisis as they witness the symptoms of psychological stress and exhaustion among medical professionals. These professionals are struggling with anxiety, insomnia, depression, intrusive thoughts, emotional avoidance and nightmares, all of which increase the risk of mental health issues. Despite their efforts to provide mental health care to these individuals, there is still much work to be done to expand this support.

Davide Musardo, MSF’s Mental Health Activity Manager in Gaza emphasizes the need for a different approach to mental health support for medical staff who are more aware of the impact of their work. He believes that safety is a crucial element required for psychological support and treatment but in an environment where even caregivers are not safe it is challenging to build resilience and coping mechanisms.

The looming offensive on Rafah only adds to the stress and anxiety felt by medical professionals in Gaza. Local health authorities report over 34,000 people killed since October 7, including 499 healthcare workers. Tragically, five MSF colleagues are among the casualties. The situation in Gaza is dire and there is an urgent need for increased mental health support for medical staff to help them cope with the trauma they have experienced.
