Apple has significantly increased its production of iPhones in India, with one in seven of the company’s phones now being manufactured there. This move comes as Apple looks to reduce its reliance on China due to growing geopolitical tensions. While China will remain the primary manufacturing location for iPhones for now, Apple is facing challenges in the country from competitors like Huawei and new restrictions on foreign technology.
In 2020, Apple had $14 billion worth of iPhones assembled in India, a move that supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to attract more foreign companies to the country. This growth has already led to the creation of about 150,000 new jobs at suppliers. Additionally, Apple announced plans to build a large iPhone assembly factory in Tamil Nadu in partnership with Indian industrial group Tata, with the factory expected to be operational by mid-2025.
By diversifying its production locations and increasing its presence in India, Apple aims to strengthen its global supply chain and reduce potential risks associated with overreliance on a single country for manufacturing.
