Battling for Fairness: The Unanimous Rejection of SNOLAB’s Contract Proposal by the United Steelworkers Union in Sudbury, Ontario

Workers Receive Substandard Final Offer from the World-Class SNOLAB Institute

In Sudbury, Ontario, the United Steelworkers union (USW) has unanimously rejected a substandard contract offer from SNOLAB, highlighting the laboratory’s failure to negotiate a fair collective agreement that takes into account the cost of living for its employees.

The workers at SNOLAB play a vital role in conducting world-class testing, research, and experiments at the facility’s underground laboratory deep inside Vale’s Creighton Mine. Their work has garnered global recognition, including a Nobel prize. However, despite its reputation as a “world-class science facility,” SNOLAB’s actions at the bargaining table demonstrate a lack of concern for retaining world-class employees. USW staff representative Tracy Nguyen involved in the negotiations expressed disappointment in SNOLAB’s offer of wages below current standards and demands for concessions from workers.

SNOLAB received $2 million in public funding in October 2023, in addition to an initial $12 million in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities. This funding was intended to support the facility’s growth, create jobs, and attract skilled professionals to the region. However, the current contract negotiations have reached a critical point where SNOLAB must choose to return to the bargaining table and provide a fair compensation package that alleviates the financial burden on workers.

The USW is urging SNOLAB to reconsider its position and engage in meaningful negotiations to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. For media inquiries, contact Tracy Nguyen, USW Staff Representative, Pascal Boucher, USW Area Co-ordinator or Lorei Leigh De Los Reyes, USW Communications.
