Belfast International Airport Revolutionizes Passenger Experience with New 3D Security Technology

New technology set to revolutionize passenger experience leads to relaxation of NI airport security rules

Belfast International Airport is revolutionizing the passenger experience by introducing new technology that allows passengers to keep liquids and electricals in their carry-on bags as they pass through security. This announcement comes as VINCI Airports, the owner of Belfast International Airport, plans to invest £100m in upgrading the airport’s operational efficiency, passenger experience, and environmental performance.

The airport will be implementing industry-leading 3D security screening technologies from Smiths Detection, which is expected to transform the way passengers travel through the airport. The new technology provides security staff with more detailed images of the contents of passengers’ bags, ensuring a safe and efficient experience for all travelers.

Nabeel Gill, Head of Security at Belfast International Airport, emphasized the airport’s commitment to sustainably developing security standards and increasing operational efficiency. The new technology is aimed at providing a seamless and hassle-free experience for passengers traveling through the airport.

In December 2022, the UK government introduced new legislation that will allow passengers at major UK airports to carry liquids in containers holding up to two liters starting from June 2024. Travelers will no longer be required to carry these containers in clear plastic bags or remove tablets and laptops from their hand luggage at checkpoints. Major airports will be required to install new technology that provides security staff with more detailed images of the contents of passengers’ bags to comply with the new regulations.

Overall, Belfast International Airport’s investment in new technology and infrastructure is expected to greatly improve the passenger experience while also increasing operational efficiency and reducing its environmental impact.
