Beyond Borders: The El Paso Science Festival Promotes Innovation and Inspiration for Young Minds

El Paso Science Festival to Feature Astronaut Jose Hernandez, 70 Exhibits on April 6-7

The El Paso Science Festival, an initiative of the Consulate General of Mexico, is set to take place at the El Paso Convention Center on April 6 and 7. The festival aims to promote innovation and science spaces for young people in the border community. With over 70 interactive activities and exhibits suitable for all ages, it promises to be an inclusive, fun, and educational experience for everyone.

Enrique Gomez, Co-Director and Founder of El Paso Science Festival, encourages attendees to come prepared to learn a lot and have a lot of fun. Eric Pearson, president and CEO of El Paso Community Foundation, a co-sponsor of the event, sees it as an opportunity for kids to see science not as a subject they have to study in school but as something to experiment with and be inspired by. Gomez was inspired to start the festival by his own childhood experiences growing up in Juarez without many possibilities. Despite the challenges he faced, he went on to work for NASA, programming computers onboard space shuttles.

The festival will feature Jose Hernandez, a migrant farmworker-turned-astronaut who will share his story through a screening of the film “A Million Miles Away” based on his life. Kids can also participate in hands-on activities that showcase the wonders of science and technology. These activities include building their own robots or creating their own experiments using everyday materials like soda cans or rubber bands.

The El Paso Science Festival is free to attend and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., making it accessible for everyone in the community. This event is just one example of how science can inspire young people and open up new opportunities for them in their future careers.
