Evanston students mesmerized by spectacle – NBC Chicago

Evanston’s Nichols Middle School has recently introduced learning about solar and lunar eclipses in its eighth-grade science curriculum. Students have traditionally studied these phenomena through textbooks and visual aids, but they recently had an unforgettable experience of witnessing a solar eclipse in person.

Equipped with solar glasses, the class gathered on the school lawn to witness the celestial event as it reached its peak. The students were amazed and couldn’t help but express their excitement with sounds of wonder and amazement. Ben Apter, the eighth-grade science teacher, emphasized how lucky the students were to view almost total solar eclipse. He described it as one of the coolest natural events they could witness, making it a dream come true for many.

Before witnessing the solar eclipse, the students had received educational information about these events during a tour of the Adler Planetarium. This hands-on experience allowed them to see the science lesson come to life before their eyes, providing a rare and exciting opportunity for learning. Noah Swift reflected on his luck in witnessing the solar eclipse, realizing that it might be years before he has another chance to witness such a rare event. The experience left a lasting impression on the students, reinforcing the importance of real-life experiences in learning.

Anna Naidech expressed her awe at witnessing the eclipse in real life, stating that it was even cooler than she had imagined. Bella Henderson shared Naidech’s sentiments, mentioning how incredible it was to witness a solar eclipse during her lifetime and to be part of a generation that could appreciate and remember the event.
