Borrell’s Call for European Self-Reliance in Defense: A New Era for the EU and NATO

Borrell urges EU to strengthen common defense as war threat becomes a reality

In a New Economy Forum event, Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, highlighted the need for Europe to develop its own military capabilities and take responsibility for defense. While he emphasized that war is not imminent, Borrell stressed the importance of being prepared to act independently in matters of defense due to the uncertainty of US commitment to European security. He noted that Europe must create its own capabilities and take responsibility for its defense rather than solely relying on external allies.

Borrell discussed the evolving nature of the European project and suggested that the Union is now entering a new phase focused on developing a common Defense and Security pillar. He emphasized NATO’s irreplaceable role in ensuring security on the continent but also underscored the necessity of a strong European pillar within the organization. Borrell addressed financing issues by pointing out the need for a new intergovernmental instrument to support European Defense efforts. He emphasized Member States increasing their investment in defense and strengthening NATO through enhanced European military weight and spending.

Borrell’s remarks highlight the importance of European self-reliance and cooperation in ensuring security amidst changing geopolitical dynamics. The EU must prioritize building its own military capabilities while continuing to work with NATO as part of a broader strategy for maintaining peace and stability on the continent.
