Breaking Barriers: Fresno’s Black Community Takes a Stand during Maternal Health Week

Downtown Fresno Hosts Black Maternal Health Fair and Jubilee

In Fresno, California, the community is taking a stand during Black Maternal Health Week to shed light on the disparities faced by black women in pregnancy-related causes. Despite being three times more likely to die from these causes compared to white women, statistics continue to highlight the effects of systemic racism and bias in healthcare.

To raise awareness and promote equitable access to quality healthcare for all women, the Black Wellness and Prosperity Center organized a health fair and jubilee in Downtown Fresno. The event featured a celebratory walk, free food, dancing, yoga, giveaways, and valuable health resources for attendees to access. It served as a platform to honor the work being done to address the disparities in maternal health outcomes for black women.

As Black Maternal Health Week continues through April 17th, the community in Fresno remains committed to advocating for change and promoting equity in maternal health care for all women. By coming together and raising awareness, they hope to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of black mothers and their children.
