At her Washington residence, Vice President Kamala Harris recently hosted a Women’s History Month celebration in conjunction with the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded by tennis icon Billie Jean King. The event honored the theme of trailblazing females in sports and brought together a diverse group of women to celebrate their achievements.

The reception featured accomplished athletes and influential figures in the sports world, including Nikki Fargas, president of the Las Vegas Aces, Renee Montgomery, retired WNBA player and part owner of the Atlanta Dream, and Lisa Leslie, a three-time WNBA MVP and four-time Olympic gold medalist. These women all praised the trailblazing women in sports during the event.

Vice President Harris emphasized the importance of the work being done daily by these women to benefit people of all genders. She highlighted the significance of providing equitable access to opportunities in sports, which can lead to the development of strong leaders and a more resilient nation. Harris shared her mother’s advice about being the first and paving the way for others, emphasizing the importance of self-empowerment and standing up for oneself.

As part of her efforts to support female athletes, Harris has made surprise visits to young female athletes across the country. She visited coach Dawn Staley and the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team in January and recently surprised the St. Paul Central High School softball team, which was also invited to the Women’s History Month reception.
