The Brighton High School Science Olympiad team had an impressive showing at the Michigan Science Olympiad held over the weekend at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The team scored first place in the state in the Scrambler event, where they had to construct a small car that traveled a distance of 6-12 meters. Despite finishing in the middle of the pack overall, both teams performed admirably given the tough competition they faced.
Scranton Middle School also did exceptionally well, earning medals in two events. They finished 6th in the Pentathlon, a relay race that required both physical tasks and answering science questions. Additionally, they placed 7th in Dynamic Planets, a written test that focused on large-scale geological events like earthquakes and volcanoes.
Shannan Pereira, coach of both teams for nine years at Brighton High School and four years at Scranton Middle School, expressed pride in her students’ efforts. As an engineer herself, she commended them for their hard work throughout the season and for representing their schools against some of the best teams in Michigan. Both teams left a lasting impression on their respective events.
